Where Should Super Funds Invest in the Race to Improve Australian Retiree Preparedness? The solution lies in ensuring every member feels clear and confident with a plan. Our survey and analysis of over 4,000 members across 20+ funds uncover the key drivers of retirement confidence and disentangles where Super funds can make the most impactful Retirement Income Covenant (RIC) investments. What we learnt from our study: 1.  Over 75% of pre-retirees feel unprepared for retirement. 2. Retirement preferences are highly individual, and Super funds’ traditional approach of segmenting cohorts based on crude demographics is falling short, and will continue to do so. The study reveals this is not just a “marketing problem”, but a significant member understanding gap that can be bridged. Members who feel understood and have a clear plan show a statistically significant improvement in their feelings of preparedness as do those with lifetime income solutions. What’s next? Client discovery is an essential component of the wealth management experience. Making sure your advisors connect with both parties in a relationship is particularly crucial. I've been in the business for almost two decades & it's no secret that I believe for too long the female spouse was ignored. Obviously, that's changing but, also, evolution takes time. It's irrefutable that women increasingly shape the future of financial decision-making. Studies consistently show that women either directly manage or heavily influence household finances. In short, engaging women in financial discussions isn't just smart—it's essential. I was in the room in 2020 when a widow fired her husband's advisors because they'd never engaged her seriously in a conversation. It was extremely uncomfortable b/c that team lost $40M in AUM but it's real life - and as the Great Wealth Transfer continues to gain steam it will become more common for those advisors who don't change with the times. My friends at Capital Preferences did a study to understand how equitable treatment plays into advice relationships, looking at how couples make investing decisions as a household, with special attention to the role that risk plays.
