Going beyond indexing since 1981.

About us

Dimensional has been implementing the great ideas in financial science since 1981. Our firm is driven by an evidence-based approach, Nobel Prize-winning insights, and decades of expertise pursuing outperformance over benchmarks and peers while maintaining low costs and diversification. Dimensional’s founders launched some of the first index funds in the 1970s. In the 1980s they broke new ground pioneering factor investing, starting the firm with the belief that investors could do better than indexing through a research-backed approach using up-to-date information on what can improve returns. We believe this can lead to better outcomes for investors than active stock-picking or passive indexing. Our commitment to research, rigor, and the pursuit of truth has helped transform the industry toward more transparent, data-driven solutions. That commitment continues to propel Dimensional forward today. Dimensional is headquartered in Austin, Texas, and has more than 1,500 employees in offices around the world. The firm offers a full suite of regional and global equity and fixed income solutions. As of December 31, 2024, Dimensional and its affiliates managed $777 billion for investors worldwide. __ Dimensional Fund Advisors LP is an investment advisor registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission. *“Dimensional” refers to the Dimensional separate but affiliated entities generally, rather than to one particular entity. • Pi is a mathematical constant that represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. While pi has an infinite number of digits in its decimal representation, shortened versions are used as proxies. And these proxies empower critical technologies that span from satellite communications to electric motors.

Ringing the NYSE Bell: A Reminder to Tune Out the Noise Standing on the podium at the NYSE yesterday, ringing the bell to celebrate the premiere of Tune Out the Noise—a new film by Academy Award-winning director Errol Morris that’s now available for US audiences on YouTube —I couldn’t help but think back to my very first visit to the exchange. It was the early ’80s, shortly after founding Dimensional. I brought my parents to New York City for the first time, and I still remember their wide-eyed reaction as we emerged from the Lincoln Tunnel, Manhattan stretching out before us. They were definitely not in Kansas anymore! During that trip, I arranged a visit to the NYSE floor. My parents saw chaos—I saw something remarkable. Public markets in motion, constantly adjusting to new information. Price discovery in action. Decades later, many people still view markets with the same anxiety my parents felt that day. But here’s what I’ve learned: The public stock and bond markets aren’t something to fear or outsmart. They’re one of humanity’s greatest innovations—powerful, resilient, and designed to reward discipline. The more we understand this, the better we can tune out the noise and invest with confidence. Dimensional worked with Errol because we wanted to help more people discover there’s a better way to invest. The result is a powerful story that captures the energy and excitement of a series of breakthroughs that changed investing forever. The film chronicles the history of how investing became a science and follows key figures, many affiliated with Dimensional, who paved the way for a different approach to investing that’s improved people’s lives. We hope this documentary helps others have an “aha moment” on investing, whether you’re saving to buy a home, put your kids through college, or make future dreams come true. After first screening the film for Dimensional employees and financial professionals, we’re ready to share this message of “science-based hope” with a broader audience. If you’re in the US, watch it on YouTube now—and send it to friends and family who might benefit from a new perspective on investing: https://lnkd.in/gV6Yrpe3 #TuneOutTheNoiseFilm Photo courtesy of NYSE Group, Inc.

I’ve spent most of my life thinking about investing—two years studying it in school and another 55 trying to explain what I’ve learned. What keeps me excited about it after all these years is something I call science-based hope—the concept that we don’t have to guess our way through investing. Research, data, and history give us a road map for investing in public markets, showing us that markets aren’t just places where stocks and bonds are traded—they are one of the greatest tools for building wealth and creating opportunities. Stock and bond markets work because they are powered by human ingenuity. The companies listed on an exchange represent the collective efforts of millions of entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers, and employees striving to build something better. The market doesn’t move randomly; it moves because people innovate, take risks, and bring new ideas to life. Across industries—from health care to manufacturing, logistics to retail—companies large and small are constantly evolving, solving problems, and driving progress. Investing in public markets isn’t just about owning shares; it’s about participating in the long-term success of businesses that shape our world. But what’s clear to me from the thousands of conversations I’ve had—with everyone from financial advisors to investors to students—over the course of my career is that too many people feel like outsiders when it comes to investing. My career has shown me you don’t have to be an insider to succeed. I want to help more people understand how markets work—because when that understanding hits, it can be like a light turning on, an aha moment. It might come from a chart, a simple story, or even a video of Nobel Prize-winning economist (and my lifelong friend) Gene Fama explaining markets. But when it clicks, investing stops feeling like a gamble and starts feeling like a process you can trust. Often these moments start with a conversation, which is what I hope to encourage here on LinkedIn. The best ideas don’t come from one person—they come from all of us sharing what we know and what we’ve experienced.

  • The future is unpredictable. But that doesn’t stop market forecasters from trying, and in recent years, analysts have consistently forecast returns well above or below the market’s eventual result. In a webcast, Dimensional Co-CEO and Co-CIO Gerard O’Reilly talked about how 2024 was no different.
